The City of Suffolk, Virginia is enhancing road safety citywide through a broad Traffic Enforcement Camera Program that targets common violations in high-risk zones. The initiative covers:

  • Red light running

  • Speeding in school zones

  • Passing stopped school buses

  • Speeding in construction work zones

This program is a joint effort by the City of Suffolk, Altumint (technology vendor), and the Suffolk Police Department, ensuring that civil penalties are issued only after officer review of photographic and video evidence.

🚦 Four Types of Traffic Enforcement Cameras:

  1. Red Light Photo Enforcement Cameras

  2. School Zone Speed Enforcement Cameras

  3. School Bus Stop-Arm Enforcement Cameras

  4. Work Zone Speed Enforcement Cameras

🚨 Red Light Photo Enforcement Cameras

These cameras are placed at high-risk intersections and monitor vehicles that enter after the light turns red for 0.5 seconds or more.

📸 How It Works:

  • Photo-enforced signs are installed within 500 feet of each monitored intersection.

  • A high-speed camera and sensor system records:

    • A photo before the stop bar

    • A second image in the intersection

    • A license plate close-up

    • A 12-second video showing the full violation

  • Suffolk Police review and confirm violations.

  • Holland Rd at Suffolk Bypass (West End)

  • Harbour View Blvd at Bridge Rd

  • College Dr at Bridge Rd

  • Main St at Constance Rd

  • Godwin Blvd at Kings Fork Rd

  • Portsmouth Blvd–Nansemond Pkwy–E. Washington St

  • Coming Soon: Shoulders Hill Rd at Bridge Rd (post-construction)

  • One additional site under evaluation

💵 Penalty: $50 fine (civil; no points or insurance impact)

🏫 School Zone Speed Enforcement Cameras

Active during designated school hours, these cameras capture drivers exceeding posted limits. A warning period is in place before citations are issued.

💵 Penalty: $100 fine

🚌 School Bus Stop-Arm Enforcement Cameras

These cameras activate when a bus's stop arm is extended. Motorists who illegally pass a stopped school bus will be cited.

💵 Penalty: $250 fine

🚧 Work Zone Speed Enforcement Cameras

To protect road crews and drivers, Work Zone Speed Enforcement Cameras are now operational and will move between active construction areas across the city.

  • Route 58 / Holland Road Widening Project

💵 Penalty: $100 fine

These cameras follow the same review and citation process as other systems—ensuring that violations are legitimate and evidence-backed.
